Nourishment

Feed the garden within.

The third pillar of the practice. Food as medicine, taken seriously.

Diet is part of the work.

The nervous system does not exist in isolation from the gut. The microbes living in your digestive tract largely determine which neurotransmitters make it to your brain at all. Inflammation, blood sugar swings, microbial imbalance, the absence of nutrients the brain genuinely needs. These all show up as dysregulation upstream. You can sit and breathe through a great deal, and the practice will carry you far. But if the body is at war with what you feed it, the work is harder than it needs to be.

For clients who want to address the dietary side of this seriously, I point them to one resource. Read it, and the conversations we have in session can go much deeper.

The Book I Recommend

Food as medicine, made practical.

Dr. Andrew Miles and Dr. Xuelan Qiu distilled decades of Classical Chinese Medicine and modern microbiome research into a single accessible volume. It covers what is essential for understanding food as medicine, and how to begin applying that for yourself in real ways. This is the foundation I want clients working from.

How it fits with the rest.

The meditation and qigong are not separate from this. As awareness builds, you start to feel what food does to you. The fog after a particular meal. The bloat, the queasiness, the slow heavy feeling that lingers. The clarity of a digestion that works with you instead of against you. The body becomes legible in a way it wasn't before, and dietary change stops being an exercise in willpower. It becomes something you can actually feel your way through.

This is why the practice as a whole works. Mind, body, and gut are not three problems to solve. They are one system, and treating them as one is the whole point.

The Next Step

Take it further.

I'm always happy to use a consultation to go over the concepts the book presents, or to answer questions that arise once you've started reading. If diet is the piece you've been looking for, this is a good place to begin.
